Naturopath's Voice - Renee

Naturopath's Voice

Thank you for all of your great feedback on our newsletter last month. I’ve taken a bit of a water-based approach this issue, with an informative overview on the benefits of fish oils (omega 3), a great offer on Green Lipped Mussels, and a feature on our sponsored swimmer, Roxy Adams. I’ve also included a simple, healthy recipe, for that easy and delicious balanced breakfast or as a quick snack to fuel you until your next meal.

On a topical note, there has already been full media coverage on the threats of Swine Flu, so I won’t focus on the facts and figures here. However, it is fair to say that we should all take a balanced and holistic approach to prevention by taking steps to naturally enhance the fighting power of our bodies. I’m a big advocate of incorporating UMF active Manuka honey into the diet as it helps to support the immune system with its antibacterial properties. Natural antiviral supplements are beneficial in that they can support your innate immune defence before you are exposed to viruses, meaning that your body is in a stronger position to put up a good fight. Viral Guard is one of my favourite combinations for this purpose as it contains antibacterial, antiviral, and immune stimulatory herbs such as Astragalus, Pau d’Arco, and Olive Leaf. Other common sense approaches should be followed such as covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, general hand-washing and avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth as germs spread that way.

At the end of the day, the aim is to stay in good general health; Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food. If Swine Flu never presents itself to you (fingers crossed…), you can at least be assured that you have taken a holistic and sensible approach to preventing other common strains of influenza that we are all susceptible to as well.

Omega 3

Contrary to popular belief, the body does need fat. However, it must be the right kind of fat. There are fats that are bad for us and fats that are good for us, but some fats are actually vital for the correct functioning of our bodies. Every living cell in the body needs essential fatty acids (EFAs), as they are essential for rebuilding and producing new cells. NZ Health Naturally Omega 3 has been sourced from wild, cold water, oily fish and has been quality tested to ensure low levels of mercury. It contains the essential fatty acids DHA and EPA. Regular consumption of omega-3 fatty acids may help to prevent blood clots, protect against irregular heartbeats, lower blood pressure and aid in the maintenance of general wellbeing.
