 Green Lipped Mussels

New Zealand Health Naturally

NZ Health Naturally is proud to source Green Lipped Mussels from the Marlbourough Sounds in New Zealand’s south island seas. Green Lipped Mussels are found exclusively off the waters of New Zealand and for centuries, this edible shellfish has been a major part of the diet of the local populations. Green Lipped Mussels (GLM) are a pure, natural, whole food that possess an exceptional degree of bio activity.

"Green Lipped Mussel is a natural product from the sea that has exceptional potential to aid the body in halting the progression of joint and connective tissue disease as well as promote the regeneration and healing of arthritic and injured joints."

The edible GLM contains the ocean’s natural mineral balance, which is similar to that found in the human body. Research has shown that the shellfish contains natural anti inflammatory agents, immune modulators and many essential building blocks needed to rebuild collagen, joints, ligaments and tendons.

To make the NZ Health Naturally Green Lipped Mussel supplement, the mussels are harvested at the peak of their growth curve and once collected, the soft tissue gets separated from the shell. It is then flash froze and freeze dried, removing water to allow it to be processed into a fine power. The manner in which GLM is concentrated doesn’t destroy or inactivate the biologically active constituents.

Research over the past 20 years has revealed that the shellfish contains a number of potentially active components hat work against the destructive cycle of degenerative joint disease. (7,1, 9-11) In 1974, GLM were found to be a potential natural remedy for arthritis. (1) Numerous animal and human studies have indicated that this product from the sea might offer safe and effective relief from pain, inflammation, and other debilitating symptoms associated with both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. (2) Several human studies gave positive results as to the mussel’s ability to prevent multiple symptoms of arthritis when compared to conventional anti inflammatory drugs. (3, 4) The beneficial properties have been linked to the presence of complex natural components called ‘glycosaminoglycans’ (GAGs). (5-6) GAGs are a major component of cartilage and connective tissue. (9)

GLM provides a rich source of GAGs which are the principle components of cartilage and the synovial fluid found around the joint. A loss of GAGs leads to greater stiffness in the joint and increases the potential for injury. Evidence suggest that GAGs effectively inhibit the action of degrading enzymes, which contribute to cartilage breakdown. (7, 8)

As a nutritional supplement, GLM provides some of the key building blocks that the body uses to rebuild cartilage and may even work to deactivate the cartilage destroying enzymes that cause further deterioration of the joints. Individuals with shellfish allergy should not consume this product. GLM is a natural product from the sea that has exceptional potential to aid the body in halting the progression of joint and connective tissue disease as well as promote the regeneration and healing of arthritic and injured joints.
